NUNV Project Associate - Community-Based Natural Resource Management

Responsibilities:

  • The Project Associate will support the Landscape Project Management Unit in planning and implementation of activities related to conservation and sustainable livelihoods. The specific responsibilities will be:
    • Sensitization of communities and other relevant stakeholders on Biological Diversity Act, 2002 and Biological Diversity Rules 2004 and other connected issues like Peoples Biodiversity Register (PBRs), Access & Benefit Sharing (ABS), Nagoya Protocol etc.
    • Support the UT in formation of Biodiversity Management Committees (BMCs) in the project villages as per the guidelines of National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) and Ladakh Biodiversity Council.
    • Support the UT in the Preparation of Peoples Biodiversity Registers (PBRs) ensuring documentation of natural resources (flora and fauna) and traditional knowledge through engagement of technical support groups and BMCs
    • Support the UT in establishing mechanism to implement Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) in the landscape- work closely with the Biodiversity Council for designing ABS strategies for the landscape
    • Establish efficient communication and coordination with Biodiversity Council, BMCs, Landscape level Project Management Unit, and National Project Management Unit with respect to project activities in the UT
    • Support the landscape team in monitoring and provide thematic inputs to ongoing assignments on (i) updating/Developing the State Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plans and Resource Mobilization Strategies for implementing the SBSAP’s in Jammu & Kashmir, (ii) Detailed Assessment of Medicinal and Aromatic Plant (MAP) species including their collection, usage, demand, markets, price trends and life cycle
    • Support the landscape team in implementation of activities related community mobilization and sustainable livelihoods under Outcome 2.
    • Work closely with the landscape team in preparation of Annual Work Plan, quarterly and annual reports of the project
    • Identify Central/State Government programmes, projects, scheme mission etc. related to biodiversity and identifying opportunities for convergence, co-finance and resource mobilization
    • Link the Biodiversity conservation related activities with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
    • Perform administrative tasks, as and when required.

Educational requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree from a recognized institution in Biological Science/Environmental Science/ Natural Resource Management /Biodiversity Conservation/public policy is essential. 
  • Master’s degree from a recognized institution in Biological Science/Environmental Science/ Natural Resource Management /Biodiversity Conservation/public policy is desirable.

Experience requirements:

  • Minimum 1 year of experience in managing large-scale projects on natural resource management, biodiversity conservation or social development in India.
  • Experience of working with Central/State Governments will be preferred.

Desired Skills:

  • Close familiarity with the roles, activities, and priorities of the Ministry of Environment Forest and Climate Change, State Forest/Wildlife Departments, other State partners and UNDP, with regard to natural resource management, biodiversity conservation, agriculture, sustainable land management and/or wildlife crime management.
  • Basic technical understanding of implementing a communications strategy relevant to natural resource management and socio-economic development.
  • Basic technical understanding of using design software.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a broad range of stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively under close supervision, as well as under minimal supervision.
  • Close familiarity with the operations and rules of the Ministry of Environment Forest and Climate Change and/or UNDP is not a mandatory requirement but will be an added advantage.
