Project Description: WaterAid India (Jal Seva Charitable Foundation) is implementing a 3-year project to address the situation of the manual scavengers in the 4 states of India – Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, supported by the European Commission- European Instrument for Democracy and Human Rights (EC-EIDHR). The proposed action intends to organise the women manual scavengers engaged in cleaning of dry latrines, as well as their CSOs/ networks, and to advocate for their rights to justice and thereby contribute to promote an inclusive, equitable and peaceful society in line with SDGs 6, 10 and 16.
Responsibilities:
- evidence generation on the prevalence of the inhuman practice of manual scavenging;
- identification of gaps in implementation of the law and solutions for the same;
- media interventions and communication at the community level;
- campaigns for conversion of insanitary dry latrines to sanitary latrines;
- advocacy initiatives at various levels for proper implementation of the law
- identification of alternate livelihoods and business models and capacity building to support the rehabilitation of women engaged in this work

Scope of work:
- Planning and organizing capacity building sessions for women engaged in manual scavenging, including preparation of relevant resource materials
- Planning and organizing exposure visits for women engaged in manual scavenging
- Coordination with resource persons at the community level for smooth and timely implementation and monitoring of activities mentioned above
- Provide regular and timely handholding and support to self-help group members, including support for personal protective measures
- Support WaterAid India team members and other consultants in conducting the end of action study, video documentation, and other activities as required
- Any other tasks under the project, as suggested by the reporting manager
Requirements:
- Based in either of the project states (i.e. Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand)
- Experience of implementing district-level interventions for supporting self-help groups
- Experience of coordinating and facilitating training and capacity building for self-help groups
- Experience of working with a team of field resource persons or volunteers
- Strong planning, organizing, networking and coordination skills
- Proficiency in Hindi and local language/dialect is required.
- Willingness to travel to project locations regularly
- A strong understanding of aspects of equity and inclusion, especially on issues faced by manual scavengers
- Preference will be given to applicants belonging to Dalit community, and/or those who have worked closely with the persons engaged in manual scavenging work
